Secondary Lymphoedema after Lymphadenectomies

Summary
The increasing number of solid tumours requires also more and more surgical lymphadenectomies and radiotherapy of the appropriate lymph nodes. Therefore, an increased number of secondary lymphaedemas is greater to be expected. The authors meet at the out-patient clinics people with advanced stages of such edemas whose therapy is neglected by specialists who participate in tumor treatment. In the presented article, a pathophysiological explanation of lymphoedema in relation to the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system is provided. From the point of view of treatment the authors emphasize easily available pharmacotherapy of systemically administered proteinases which is currently considered besides physical methods, the causal method of choice.
